This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment, and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing. This unit applies to individuals working in collection centres, hospitals, other health care environments, and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing takes place.

Course Overview

This course is designed to have you trained according to the Australian Standards AS/NZS 4308:2008 or AS 4760- 2019 for the collection of non-blood specimens, such as urine and/or oral fluids and breath analysis AS 3547:1997 within a variety of environments. Topics include:

  • Following established technical, infection control and safety procedures duringc ollection
  • Selecting, preparing, and understanding compliant equipment and collection kits
  • Collecting urine, oral fluid, and breath specimens for drugs of abuse testing
  • Legal issues surrounding drug testing and the context for drugs of abuse testing
  • Ethical considerations
  • Pre, post and during collection procedures required to meet the chain of custody requirements
  • Staff safety
  • Specific environmental and specimen requirements that eliminate the opportunity to tamper with specimen
  • Storage and transportation
  • Australian Standards and organisational policies and procedures
