Provide Advanced First Aid

HLTAID014
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced first aid response, including management of the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. It is relevant to workers who may be required to provide, coordinate, and manage a first aid response across a range of complex situations.

Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Topics include:

  • Assessing an emergency and conducting a basic triage for multiple casualties
  • Airway & breathing management, including choking and airway obstruction
  • Single-rescuer or two-rescuer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation techniques (CPR), including the use of a Bag-Valve Mask (BVM), on a child and adult casualty
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Medical conditions including cardiac events, diabetes, andepilepsy
  • Infection control and first aid for minor wounds
  • Allergic reactions, Anaphylaxis and Asthma
  • Administration of auto injectors
  • Control of major external bleeding and shock
  • Wound management, including haemostatic dressings and application of a tourniquet
  • Management of near drowning, hyperthermia and hypothermia
  • Burns and electrical shock
  • Eye and soft tissue injuries, fractures, and spinal injuries, incorporating spinal immobilisation
  • Venomous bites and sting
  • Head, chest, and abdominal injuries
  • Assessment of the sick and injured, including taking vital signs
  • Communicating details of an incident, including handover to the ambulance and reporting requirements
  • Evacuation of a casualty
  • Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents

Course Duration

Option 1 16 hours (2 x 8-hour days) classroom training and assessment with online module questions
Option 2 10 hours classroom training with online lectures, theory, and module questions

Option 3 24 hours (3 x 8-hour days) full face-to-face training and assessment

Assessment Methods

Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Students must be able to demonstrate CPR on a manikin placed on the ground to be competent in this course.
