Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. It is relevant to workers who may be required to use specialised equipment to provide resuscitation in a range of complex situations, include community and workplace settings.

Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to recognise an emergency and provide emergency life support until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Topics include:

  • Introduction to first aid principles
  • Assessing an emergency
  • Airway and breathing management, including suctioning techniques and insertion of an oropharyngeal airway adjunct
  • Single-rescuer and two-rescuer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation techniques, including the use of a Bag-Valve Mask (BVM)
  • Safe administration of oxygen therapy
  • Selection of oxygen delivery methods
  • Use and interpretation of a pulse oximeter
  • Operation of Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Administration of oxygen to a conscious/unconscious patient
  • Preparation and use of advanced resuscitation equipment
  • Management of medical conditions, including chest pain, stroke, and seizures
  • Management of haemorrhoage and life-threatening injuries
  • Wound management, including use of haemostatic wound dressings and tourniquet
  • Infection control
  • Assessment of the sick and injured, including taking vital signs
  • Communicating details of an incident, including handover to the ambulance and reporting requirements
  • Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents
  • Checking and maintenance of equipment

Course Duration

Option 1 – 8 hours classroom training and assessment with online module questions
Option 2 – 6 hours practical with online lectures, theory, and module questions

Option 3 – 16 hours (2 x 8-hour days) full face-to-face training and assessment

Assessment Methods

Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills, and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Students must be able to demonstrate CPR on a manikin placed on the ground to be competent in this course.
