Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting

This course applies to teachers and support staff working in education or children’s services who may be required to respond to a first aid emergency. It incorporates the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children, and adults.

Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Topics include:

  • Airway and breathing management including choking and airway obstruction
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation techniques on adults, children, and infants
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, and infant convulsions
  • Infection control and first aid for minor wounds
  • Risk management and emergency management for asthma andanaphylaxis, including administration of autoinjectors and asthma medication
  • Control of major external bleeding and shock
  • Management of near drowning, hyperthermia and hypothermia
  • Burns and electrical shock
  • Eye and soft tissue injuries, fractures, and spinal injuries
  • Venomous bites and stings
  • Head, chest, and abdominal injuries
  • Assessment of the sick and injured, including undertaking vital signs
  • Emergency action plans for known medical conditions
  • Legal considerations under the Education and Care Services National Law
  • Communicating details of an incident, including handover to the ambulance and reportingrequirements
  • Completion of workplace or site documentation
  • Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents

Assessment Methods

Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Students must be able to demonstrate CPR on a manikin placed on the ground to be competent in this course.
