Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. It is relevant to all workers who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to recognise a cardiac emergency, provide emergency life support, and provide first aid until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Topics include:

  • Introduction to first aid principles & infection control
  • Assessing a cardiac emergency
  • Airway & breathing management
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation techniques on an infant and adult, including chest compressions and rescue
    breaths
  • Operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Allergic Reaction, Anaphylaxis and Asthma
  • Bleeding Control and Shock
  • Choking and Airway Obstruction
  • Communicating details of an incident, including handover to the ambulance and reporting requirements
  • Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents

Assessment Methods

Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills, and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Students must be able to demonstrate CPR on a manikin placed on the ground to be competent in this course.
