Standard Mental Health First Aid

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to how to respond appropriately to individuals living with a mental health illness, experiencing exacerbation of an existing mental health illness, or are experiencing an active mental health crisis. The Standard MHFA course is offered under the authority of Mental Health First Aid Australia, based upon guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experiences of mental health problems and mental health professionals.

Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to respond appropriately to a variety of mental health illnesses, including mental health crisis, until the arrival of professional support. Topics include:

Depression
Anxiety
Psychosis
Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
Non-suicidal self-injury
Panic attacks
Traumatic events
Severe effects of alcohol or other drug use
Severe psychotic states
Aggressive behaviours

Assessment Methods

There are no formal assessments during classroom training. Participants who complete this course are eligible to complete an online Accreditation Assessment to become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider through Mental Health First Aid Australia.
